My Sweet Kids

Though they can be naughty, I think I have the sweetest kids ever...

We were driving home from school one afternoon. I was tired. The kids were (blissfully) quiet. Then Juju started singing. Quietly, pleasantly. It made me smile. I flipped my rearview mirror down so I could see her face. She was still singing, kicking her feet and looking out the window. It made me smile more.

I glanced over at Cowboy. He was watching her, too, grinning. He didn't know I could see him in the mirror. He watched her silently, still grinning, even chuckling to himself.

He shook his head and said, "Juju, yoo are SO KA-YOOT!"

( Chuckled again to himself and turning back to the book on his lap. )

"I juss luv her SO MUCH!"

It made me smile again. And cry a little.

Juju Bean has started having what I can only label as nightmares. She wakes up at odd hours of the night, screaming. Most of the time, she's inconsolable. Nothing I can do calms her down. Her cries are so insistent that she wakes Cowboy, too. About one out of ten times of her waking, she quiets down by herself and goes back to sleep. Once I discovered this, I began waiting a couple minutes before I go to her.  One night, we went through this scenario like normal: Juju cries, I awaken, Juju cries more, I wait while whispering my please-go-back-to-sleeps. Then she quieted down. I smiled my thank-you's and settled down under my covers. But then I heard another noise, a quieter, less-angry-nightmare noise. I got up and pulled on my robe and tip-toed down the hall to peek in her room. There was Cowboy, sitting on the floor next to Juju's crib, singing in a sleepy-boy voice, Yoo are my sunshine, my onwee sunshine. Yoo makeme hap-PEE when skies are gway..." Once Juju was asleep again, I helped a sweet, sleepy big brother back to bed, tucked him in, then sang him to sleep, too.

I think I'm probably not the only mom who likes to give good things to her kids... why do we do that? Why do we buy extra treats for them or let them lick the cake-batter out of the bowl or give them sips of our tea? It's because of the smiles and hugs and kisses we get in return, right? Cowboy's always good for a  squeeze-pop or zurbert when I surprise him with a treat. The other day, after I gave him something or other that made him warm and squishy inside, he said, "Momma, I think I love yoo a liddull mo-wa now."

My kids are so sweet.
